Thanh Ly

(pronounced tang lee)

My goal with this site is to increase access to mental health education. I believe that psychoeducation can be a great form of self-help, and strive to help my clients and the public in becoming healthier and more resilient in their daily lives. I believe in the “ripple effect,” that small positive changes and progress in any individual contribute to the well-being of society.

I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) with specialization in Psychology from the University of Ottawa. I began volunteering in the mental health field in 2012, and began working as a self-employed research consultant in 2013. I’ve held many research assistant positions (volunteer and paid) and have traveled locally, nationally, and internationally to speak at annual meetings and conferences. During the past ten years, I’ve worked with patients and clients to help them on their journey of living a life that is healthy and fulfilling. I’ve also worked behind the scenes to help facilitate and complete research studies in academic, outpatient and hospital settings.

In 2022, I completed my Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I became licensed as a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I created and run Canadian Psychotherapist Support Group (CPSG) to help clinicians nation-wide share resources and cross-provincial referrals. I also created Clinical Supes to help clinicians find supervisors to help with their professional development. I enjoy working as a psychotherapist and find it extremely rewarding and fulfilling to be able to witness a client’s growth and progress.

Historically, my research has focused on treatment and prevention in forensic mental health. Presently, I’ve turned my focus on public mental health, trauma, interpersonal relationships, resiliency & well-being, and intersectionality of identities. I strongly believe that the connection between ourselves and others is bidirectional – that is, our connections with ourselves can be a reflection of our relationship with others, and our relationships with others can affect how we connect with ourselves.

I also have a special interest in working with clients who identify as part of the BIPOC community. My clients who identify as BIPOC have found it refreshing to speak to someone who just “gets it.” They don’t have to filter themselves (or “code switch”) and don’t have to educate their therapists on what it’s like living as a visible minority.
